I never missed one in my heart

Frank Leparik discusses Balks

Sunday's drills started, with the toughest call in baseball, the BALK. On the field I was able to look at typical balk moves from both right-handed and left-handed pitchers. I was able to get good looks at what was allowed from both the plate and field positions. By the end of the drill, I was finally ready to call a BALK.

See a BALK--Call a BALK

After the BALK drill it was on to the double play. Here I was shown the correct way to handle the standard plays at both positions on the infield grass.

Covering the Double Play

My last field drill was a session, stressing communication with your partner while on the field. I got to work situations with different partners, all working the same basic IBUA mechanics system.

The 1999 IBUA Training Staff

The clinic ended with a final Q/A session and the class picture. The IBUA Clinic was a total success for me. It was a place to learn the proper modern mechanics for the two man crew. With the new techniques and tips I learned at the clinic, I can't wait until the fall season starts.

Thanks guys, many things to remember and apply!!

It isn't enough for an umpire merely to know what he's doing. He has to look as though he knows what he's doing too.
