Stephen Shaffer
Baseball Softball Dynamics Training Professional
American Federation of Umpires
Director of Umpire Development
Steve has been involved with baseball and softball for over twenty-nine years. His professional umpiring
career began in 1970 under the demanding eye of Howie Engel. Engel is known as the "Dean of Umpires" because
he brought professional mechanics and techniques to the amateur level and thus raised expected levels of
performance of umpiring officials throughout the metropolitan area. Steve worked with Engel's group for fifteen
years umpiring at the highest levels of competitive baseball and softball and holds the distinction of officiating at
numerous championship games from Stan Musial League, Connie Mack and Big League to Regional Williamsport
Little League Championships at the sixty foot diamond. The volume of his experience can best be measured by
the fact that he has umpired in over three thousand games, a solid tribute to his skill and longevity over the years.
In 1992, Steve joined the American Federation of Umpires, a new and unknown group. Before long he was
asked to become AFU's Director of Umpire Development. To date over 170 men and women have endured his
demanding, comprehensive certification process before earning their chevron and rocker as certified
professionals. Steve's training curriculum has proved to be so successful it has been modified and adapted for
young amateur umpires doing little league games at the community level. There is little doubt that his passion for
the game combined with his prowess for teaching has enabled many programs to go to the next level of play.
When you consider that he has also coached and managed at every level of competitive play you quickly grasp
why we are so pleased to have someone of his stature as a training professional of Baseball Softball Dynamics
